Overview

Rapid and exponential changes in technology are enabling a quality revolution in health. Patient Room of the Future is a multi-faceted, multi-year project. During October 2011, four designers from KP’s Innovation Consultancy were asked to use their iterative and prototyping skill sets to build out what the various technologies and work-streams can look like for Kaiser Permanente’s Patient Room of the Future.

With three focus areas of hand hygiene, reducing patient falls, and the RN perspective, the designers spent three weeks making prototypes that would impact these areas in addition to re-imaging the care experience for our patients and the work experience for our clinicians.

Process

In 2010, a team of designers and ethnographers interviewed and observed RNs, patients, and unit staff to identify opportunities to improve the interaction between nurses and patients at the bedside. The outcome of the Ethnographic Field Research conducted included a wealth of information about nursing practice and patient care as it relates to the hospital, patient room, and nursing unit settings.

The ideas generated were grounded in the ethnography research and persona characters. The promising ideas were then rapidly prototyped followed by several rounds of iterations.

Design Principles

The guiding principles for Patient Room of the Future:

    Simplify my paths
    Support me with knowledge
    Reduce my “gatekeeping” tasks

These principles continue to inform the patient room of the future ideation.

Dissemination

Kaiser 2020 Live, was a theater type performance of future use cases performed live to Senior IT Executives. In under a month, our small team, wrote, built, casted, and directed a short 10 minute play.
